The legend of wine ( listen )
Long ago, a wild hunter committed atrocities in the area of the Great Aletsch Glacier. He filled his pockets with crystals, and during the hunt, he killed not only a magnificent buck but also a chamois mother and her kid. Then dark clouds covered the sky, and a biting storm swept across the region.
Upon arriving at Lake Märjelen, an old man with a long gray beard was already waiting and urged the hunter to get into his boat so he could take him to the safety of the Great Aletsch Glacier. The hunter gratefully stepped aboard, but the old man steered his boat straight into the glacier. Laying down the oar, he stood up and transformed into a gigantic goat with large horns and fiery eyes. In a deeply sorrowful voice, he asked the hunter, "Why do you destroy my kingdom, steal my rocks, and kill my loved ones?"
Then the glacier opened up, and the boat and its occupants sank forever into the icy waters of Lake Märjelen. In stormy weather, the shepherds would tell each other over a glass of wine that they had seen a man in old clothes, carrying a weapon and a provisions bag, wandering around Lake Märjelen, searching for a ferryman to take him to the safety of the glacier's shore.
