The legend of wine ( listen )
In a small village near Brig, a pious old widow is said to have lived. She diligently spun wool every day until evening. When it grew cold outside, she is said to have let the poor souls into her home at midnight.
She would leave a small candle burning and go to bed. When the poor souls came in, they warmed themselves by the stove and stayed with old Schmidja until morning. One evening, however, Schmidja is said to have spun longer than usual. The poor souls were already calling out from the window, "Schoch, old Schmidja is still spinning!" But the old widow was determined to finish spinning this tow. Outside, however, it was Schoch (freezing cold), and the poor souls are said to have flung the door open with a gust of wind.
On the evening she died, the poor souls were said to have been seen in a procession to the glacier. Today, when the poor souls pray for entry, one should shout "Schoch, D Alt Schmidja spinnt noch" (roughly translated as "Schoch, Old Schmidja is still crazy") for protection, so that they will leave us in peace and not suddenly haunt us on the day of our death.
d'Alt Schmidia Merlot AOC VS
A deep red color with intense notes of black berries, coffee, and caramel. On the palate, it is well-balanced with a beautiful structure and well-integrated tannins. A full-bodied, harmonious wine with interesting aging potential.
