The legend of wine ( listen )
The first clergy to live in Valais are said to have been the Knights Hospitaller. Once, friendly knights visited these Hospitallers on horseback. As was customary, they were treated to a festive meal and offered wine from the Hospitallers' own vines. This wine was said to be so good that the visitors drank several cups more than they should. When the gentlemen were about to leave, they were so drunk that they couldn't tell the horse's front from its back. "What did you give us to drink? This is real hell's wine! You don't know where you'll end up!" Since that day, the wine is said to have borne its name. Today, the people of Valais know that this wine should be consumed sparingly. Therefore, you should follow my advice and only ever have one glass. However, if our guests should occasionally drink more than they should, they should make sure they know where they will spend the night if they can't find their way home.
