From the Valley up to the ridge Gewürztraminer AOC

Legend about the wine

There was a time here in Valais when the climate was much milder all year round, even milder than today, and people were able to live and feed themselves high up in the mountains. But then the climate began to change - it became once again colder, more unsettled and harsher.

And so the real nomadic life began in Visperterminen in the first half of the 18th century. The people probably had dwellings and stables in different places, but they had to be on the move throughout the year. And so you could see them as they made their way up from the village to the hamlets in spring, from there further up into the foothills of the Alps and later even up to the Alps. And in autumn all the long way back down, even all the way down to Visp. They moved in stages - from the valley up to the ridge.

But at that time it was not just people on the road. No, the poor souls also drifted around. And so it happened that quite a way from the big bend in the road in Visp, a winegrower was on his way to the valley with his cart to deliver his wine early one morning when it was still dark, when his horse shied away from him. The wagoner managed to save himself at the last second, but his horse and the wagon with the wine barrels plunged down into the gorge and, it seemed, were lost forever. The winegrower crouched desolate in the ditch and in his desperation turned to the poor souls and begged for their help. And indeed, it did not take long before he heard a noise, went into the street and saw the procession of the dead passing by. He plucked up courage and spoke to the dead. But they replied: "We can't help you, we must hurry. The first ones are already on the Siwiboden, the last ones are outside in the bend. But these will be able to help you.”

And indeed, when the procession of the dead had ended, his horse suddenly stood on the road, healthy again, and the carriage was loaded with sweeter and more delicious wine than ever. The winegrower delivered this fine wine in Visp and returned home to his loved ones with deep gratitude.
