Rollibock Muscat AOC VS

The legend about the wine

A long time ago, a wild hunter from Fieschertal wanted to collect crystals in the Lake Märjelen area of the Great Aletsch Glacier. He also found a lot of crystals near Eggishorn. He filled his pockets with the gems and in his greed destroyed many of them, so that his path was lined with shattered gems.

Towards evening he returned with a great hunger to Lake Märjelen, where he had left his gun and provisions bag. But as soon as he touched the bread, it turned to stone. Cursing, he dropped it, but as soon as it touched the ground, it returned to its original form. Angrily the hunter threw his provisions far away from him and sought out a place to sleep in the Fiescherhorn mountains.

The next morning the hunter went hunting. Soon he saw a splendid buck and shot him. While cleaning the animal, he saw a chamois not far from where he was standing, standing next to its kid with a broken leg and in great distress. Then the hunter was seized by his hunting instinct again and he first shot the mother animal and then killed the defenceless kid without mercy.

Then dark clouds covered the sky and a violent storm swept over the area. The poacher shouldered his trophies and stared back again towards Lake Märjelen, but the icy water had flooded all the way to the Great Aletsch Glacier.

Here, a ferryman, an old man with a long grey beard, was waiting and told the hunter to get into the boat so that he could bring him over to the safe shore of the Great Aletsch Glacier. The hunter gratefully accepted the ferryman's offer. But the old man did not drive to the safe shore, but sailed straight into the glacier. The hunter ordered the ferryman to turn back immediately, but the storm blew so hard and it was raining so hard that the hunter did not even hear his own voice.

When the boat reached the glacier, the ferryman put down his oar, straightened, sprang up and was suddenly as big as a giant. He had taken the form of a goat with big horns and fiery eyes, and his whole body was covered with hair and icicles, which caused a terrible jingling sound. With a deeply sad expression the Rollibock looked at the hunter and spoke in a resounding voice: "Why are you destroying my realm? What have I done to you? You can have everything you need, but why are you destroying my stones and killing my children?" The hunter was gripped with fear and he fell silent. At the same time he was ashamed of his actions. Then the glacier opened and the boat sank in the icy waters of Lake Märjelen.

The following morning the storm bells rang out in the valley: "Lake Märjelen has burst its banks!" Meadows, fields, farmland were flooded and covered with deep rubble. The hunter has never been seen since. Only in stormy weather, shepherds at Lake Märjelen said they often saw a man, in old clothes, with a gun and a provision bag. He is said to still be looking for a ferryman to take him to the safe shore of the glacier.

The Rollibock itself is a terrible and powerful spirit. Only the brave would challenge or mock the Rollibock. When challenged or mocked, it would suddenly break out and emerge with a terrible roar from the Great Aletsch Glacier, so that even the fastest could hardly escape from it. Only those who could find a chapel or a blessed house in time were saved. But whoever were seized by the Rollibock before finding refuge, were crushed.
